Overnight Route 291 Closures Could Wreck Your Commute

TINICUM TWP, PA — Drivers using Route 291 (Governor Printz Boulevard) near Philadelphia International Airport should prepare for overnight detours, lane restrictions, and possible delays as PennDOT continues a major bridge replacement project in Delaware County.

PennDOT said daytime lane closures will occur on Route 291 in both directions through the Scott Way/Bartram Avenue intersection on Monday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 2, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM for sign installation work.

More significant restrictions are scheduled overnight. From Monday, June 1, through Wednesday, June 3, westbound Route 291 (Governor Printz Boulevard) will close nightly between Scott Way/Bartram Avenue and Stevens Drive from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM the following morning for base repair, milling, and paving operations.

During the overnight closure, drivers will be directed to use southbound Interstate 95 from Bartram Avenue and exit at Route 420/Essington (Exit 9A) to reconnect with Route 291 (Governor Printz Boulevard).

Additional overnight lane closures with flagging are scheduled on Thursday, June 4, Friday, June 5, and Monday, June 8, along the same stretch of Route 291 between Scott Way/Bartram Avenue and Stevens Drive.

The work is part of a $26.5 million PennDOT project replacing the twin bridges carrying Route 291 over Conrail tracks in Tinicum Township.

Drivers should expect backups and slower travel through the corridor, especially during overnight hours when detours are active. Plan extra time and seek alternate routes where possible.
