NEW CASTLE, DE — A Wilmington man faces a felony assault charge after allegedly driving onto a basketball court at Surratte Park, striking a pedestrian and fleeing, according to New Castle County police.
Officers responded around 2:03 p.m. Aug. 20 to the park in the 400 block of Bethune Drive in the Dunleith community.
Police reported that a 51-year-old man suffered injuries to his lower extremities after being struck by a vehicle. He was transported to a hospital for treatment and later released.
Detectives with the Traffic Services Unit identified the vehicle as a Honda Accord allegedly operated by Eubanks White, 41, of Wilmington.
According to investigators, White allegedly drove onto the basketball court and made a U-turn as the victim walked from the fenced area surrounding the pool onto the court.
White then allegedly accelerated toward the man, struck him and drove onto a sidewalk before leaving the area, police reported.
Detectives with the Fugitive Apprehension and Surveillance Team located White at a Wilmington hotel Aug. 21 and took him into custody without incident.
White was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury, a misdemeanor.
He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $10,100 cash bail, according to police.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
