NEWARK, DE — A 35-year-old New Castle man faces felony charges after allegedly driving his car into the front of a Newark pub while under the influence of alcohol, according to Delaware State Police.
Investigators reported that Johnny Guzman had been a customer at Two Stones Pub, 1203 Christiana Road, before the incident. Employees allegedly asked him to leave multiple times, but he remained on the property for several hours.
According to state police, Guzman eventually entered his Mitsubishi Lancer and, while driving away, allegedly accelerated and intentionally steered toward the pub’s front doors, crashing into the building.
Troopers responded around 1:30 a.m. Aug. 15 and found the unoccupied vehicle lodged against the building. The business was closed, and no one was inside, police reported.
Investigators located documents belonging to Guzman inside the vehicle. Troopers subsequently found him walking west along Christiana Road, away from the crash scene, according to police.
Guzman allegedly showed signs of impairment and refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests. Police reported that he was taken to a hospital while troopers obtained and executed a search warrant for a blood sample.
Troopers secured an arrest warrant Aug. 20, and Guzman turned himself in at Troop 6.
He was charged with third-degree burglary, criminal mischief involving damage of $5,000 or more, driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of a property collision, malicious mischief by a motor vehicle and related traffic offenses.
Guzman was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court and released on $2,650 unsecured bond, according to state police.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
