PHILADELPHIA, PA — Chef Kurt Evans is addressing a growing void in Philadelphia’s Black neighborhoods caused by the closure of Chinese takeout restaurants. Recognizing the lack of convenient meal options, Evans launched Black Dragon Takeout, aiming to provide nutritious meals that resonate with Black culinary traditions while honoring the familiar style of Chinese takeout.
Black Dragon Takeout boasts a unique menu that merges flavors from Black and Chinese American cuisines. Dishes like collard green eggrolls and gumbo lo mein offer patrons a fresh culinary experience. Beyond the food, Evans is committed to hiring local residents and offering opportunities to those affected by incarceration, striving to uplift and transform communities. “I want to reclaim spaces once occupied by Chinese restaurants and make a positive impact,” Evans stated.
The restaurant also collaborates with Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE), a nonprofit focusing on empowering Black and brown communities. Together, they provide mobile meals and groceries, including pet supplies, to under-resourced neighborhoods in Philadelphia. James Evans, CARE’s CEO, explained, “Kurt showed us more about the people who also need food choices,” highlighting their shared mission to support both families and pets.
Located at 5260 Rodman Street, Black Dragon Takeout is more than a dining spot; it’s a community-focused initiative dedicated to quality, cultural significance, and empowerment.
