Uglies Kettle Chips Introduces New Sweet Potato Flavors to Tackle Food Waste

Uglies Kettle Chips

WOMELSDORF, PAUglies® Kettle Chips is diving into the holiday season with two new sweet potato chip flavors: Hot Honey and Spicy BBQ. These flavors, launching this month, expand on the brand’s successful ‘Sweets’ line introduced in 2022, and aim to satisfy consumer demand for unique and bold tastes.

A division of Dieffenbach’s Potato Chips Inc., Uglies is committed to reducing food waste by using imperfect potatoes to create their kettle-cooked chips. In the U.S., a staggering 26% of produce is discarded due to cosmetic imperfections. By utilizing these potatoes, Uglies not only supports farmers but also helps fight hunger, donating a portion of their profits to charity.

Sweet potatoes have become popular beyond the Thanksgiving table, with more than half of American consumers having tried and enjoyed sweet potato snacks, while another 16% are eager to try. Sales of sweet potato chips have surged by 130% over the past four years.

The hot honey flavor, now mainstream, is part of a growing trend towards “swicy” – a blend of sweet and spicy flavors. Over a third of consumers have embraced hot honey, with nearly a quarter more interested in trying it.

Jim Biondolillo, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing, expressed pride in the company’s mission, stating, “It’s an amazing thing to be able to turn something ugly into something so sweet, and bring people new varieties in delicious kettle chips, to meet their evolving tastes.”

The new flavors are now available at Giant Food Stores and will soon be rolling out to other retailers across the nation. They can also be purchased online at the brand’s website, ugliessnacks.com.
