IRS Extends Tax Relief Deadlines for Victims of Israel Attacks

Internal Revenue Service (IRS)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the recent terrorist attacks in Israel, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced an extension of tax relief for affected individuals and businesses. This move postpones a variety of federal tax-related deadlines to September 30, 2025, providing much-needed respite for those struggling to meet their obligations due to the attacks.

The IRS’s latest guidance, encapsulated in Notice 2024-72, builds on previous relief measures outlined in Notice 2023-71. Both notices aim to assist taxpayers who find themselves unable to fulfill tax-filing, tax-payment, or other time-sensitive tax-related duties due to the disruptions caused by the attacks.

Eligible individuals and businesses who have tax deadlines falling between October 7, 2023, and September 30, 2025, now have until the latter date to submit their tax returns and make necessary payments. This extension applies to a wide range of federal tax-related activities, offering comprehensive support to those impacted.

The IRS employs an automatic identification system to pinpoint taxpayers eligible for this relief, based on the principal residence or business location information from previously filed returns. This ensures that those within the covered areas receive the necessary extensions without needing to take additional steps.

For taxpayers residing outside the designated areas but still affected by the attacks, relief can be requested by contacting the IRS disaster hotline at 866-562-5227. International callers can reach the IRS at 267-941-1000 for assistance.

This IRS initiative aims to support taxpayers in the wake of unforeseen hardships, ensuring that those affected by the recent events in Israel can focus on recovery without the added pressure of imminent tax deadlines. As the situation develops, the IRS states that it continues to assess and respond to the needs of impacted taxpayers.
