PHILADELPHIA, PA — South Street will burst into music, dancing, and old-world tradition as Brauhaus Schmitz brings back its annual Maifest, turning the block into a full-day celebration of spring.
Set for Saturday, May 2, the 13th annual Maifest will take over the 700 block of South Street from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., inviting thousands of visitors to experience a lively mix of German culture, food, and family-friendly fun right in the heart of Philadelphia.
Inspired by the traditional German May Day festival, Maifest celebrates the arrival of spring with a signature centerpiece—a towering Maypole—alongside live music, folk dancing, and a full slate of interactive activities.
“Our block party has become a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike,” said Brauhaus Schmitz owner Doug Hager. “Come raise a liter with us under the giant Maypole.”
Throughout the day, attendees can enjoy performances by Die Heimatklange Band, delivering a mix of classic German oompah music and festive party hits, while the United German Hungarian Dance Group will perform traditional dances around what organizers say is Pennsylvania’s largest Maypole.
One of the day’s most anticipated events is the Liter Lift Competition at 1 p.m., where participants test their strength by holding a full liter of beer at arm’s length for as long as possible. The annual keg tapping at 1:30 p.m. will officially kick off the festivities.
Food and drink are central to the celebration, with a menu featuring German favorites such as bratwurst, schnitzel, pretzels, sauerkraut, and a pig roast. Guests can pair their meals with a selection of German beers, including lagers, wheat beers, and pilsners.
Families will find plenty to enjoy as well, with games, face painting, flower crown-making, and activities designed for all ages.
The event is free to attend, with food and beverages available for purchase. For those looking for an upgraded experience, VIP tickets include access to a private area with seating, a buffet, drink options, and additional amenities.
