WEST CHESTER, PA — The Chester County Health Department reported multiple food safety violations at licensed food establishments following inspections conducted Monday, April 20.
At Buena Vista Restaurant in Malvern, inspectors cited several violations, including improper thawing of fish in reduced oxygen packaging, which was discarded during the inspection, and chemical containers stored near clean cutting boards, creating a contamination risk.
Inspectors also noted grease buildup on equipment and in kitchen areas, as well as ice accumulation in a walk-in freezer and sanitation concerns requiring deep cleaning.
The most serious finding involved live, multi-generational German cockroach activity observed in both kitchen and seating areas, prompting recommendations for pest control measures, including deep cleaning, sealing structural gaps, and continued monitoring.
At Carlino’s Specialty Foods and Catering in West Chester, inspectors documented temperature violations in a display case, where ready-to-eat foods were stored between 46 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, above the required 41 degrees. The items were discarded during the inspection.
Additional violations at the West Chester facility included improper food handling practices, with staff observed washing produce in a hand sink instead of a designated food preparation sink.
Health officials emphasized that inspections represent conditions at the time of the visit and may not reflect long-term practices at a facility.
Several establishments were found to be in compliance during the same inspection period, including
- Bevan’s Cold Cuts in West Chester,
- Courtyard by Marriott in Coatesville,
- Crabby Joe’s at Artisan Exchange in West Chester,
- CVS Pharmacy in West Grove,
- Deysi’s Pizza & Pasta in Coatesville, and
- Zen Modern Asian Kitchen in West Grove.
