WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County will observe National Farmers Market Week from Aug. 2-8 after county commissioners approved a proclamation recognizing farmers markets as a key part of the local agricultural economy and food system.
The proclamation, presented during the commissioners’ July 16 public meeting, recognizes the role farmers markets play in connecting consumers with locally grown products while supporting farms, agricultural businesses and rural communities throughout Chester County.
Commissioners presented the proclamation to Carrie Harkness, manager of the West Chester Growers Market, and Jordan Peek, AgConnect program manager, on behalf of the 10 farmers markets featured in the 2026 Chester County Farm Guide and participating in the AgConnect Chester County Farmers Market Trail Map.
National Farmers Market Week, observed annually during the first full week of August, highlights the economic and public health contributions of local markets. In Chester County, farmers markets provide direct sales opportunities for farms while expanding access to locally produced fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy products, baked goods, flowers and other agricultural products.
Harkness said the recognition reflects the work of farmers, volunteers and market organizers who connect producers with local residents.
“It has been a real honor to work with our local farmers and also meet a lot of the members of our community and bring them both together,” Harkness said. “We are honored to accept this proclamation on behalf of all the dedicated vendors, volunteers and market managers who make these markets successful.”
Peek said farmers markets strengthen both agriculture and food security across the region.
“Farming is a huge economic driver, not only in Chester County, but across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” Peek said. “Being able to support the farmers really supports the security of our food system.”
The AgConnect Chester County Farmers Market Trail Map encourages residents and visitors to explore 10 participating markets throughout the season while learning more about local agriculture. Those markets are also featured in the 2026 Chester County Farm Guide, which includes more than 125 farms, farmers markets, agricultural businesses and community resources.
The commissioners said the proclamation reinforces the county’s continued support for agriculture and recognizes farmers markets as contributors to the local economy, farmland preservation and community well-being.
Residents are encouraged to visit local farmers markets during National Farmers Market Week and throughout the growing season to support Chester County farmers and agricultural businesses.
