THORNBURY TWP & WESTTOWN TWP, PA — A major traffic improvement project at the intersection of U.S. 202 (Wilmington Pike) and Route 926 (Street Road) has reached a significant milestone, with PennDOT announcing that major construction is complete. While most work has wrapped up, motorists should still expect occasional lane closures through August as crews finish the remaining construction activities.
The $2.9 million project was designed to improve traffic flow and reduce crashes at one of Chester County’s busiest intersections.
Improvements include a new southbound right-turn deceleration lane on U.S. 202 approaching Route 926 and an additional eastbound left-turn lane on Route 926, creating a double left-turn configuration for traffic entering U.S. 202.
The project also upgraded pedestrian and bicycle access with high-visibility crosswalks, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps and pedestrian landings. New pedestrian push buttons, countdown signal heads and improved lighting were also installed.
Road-Con Inc., of West Chester, served as the project’s general contractor. The work was funded with 80% federal and 20% state funding.
