WEST CHESTER, PA — The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) celebrated its annual Breakfast of Champions on April 23 at Penn Oaks Golf Club, recognizing outstanding volunteers and honoring their vital contributions to the community. The event highlighted the impact of countless individuals who dedicate their time and talent to support YGBW’s mission.
This year’s top awards were presented to State Senator Carolyn Comitta, Truist, and longtime YMCA advocate Joe Tankle. Additionally, 23 volunteers from YGBW’s eight branches were recognized as Branch Volunteers of the Year across categories including Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.
Distinguished Service Award
Joe Tankle received the YMCA’s Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his decades of commitment to the organization. “Joe Tankle is a steadfast advocate for the YMCA of Greater Brandywine,” noted Bertram L. Lawson II, YGBW President and CEO, during the ceremony. Tankle, who spent 35 years working in the YMCA movement, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving, saying, “I feel fortunate to have found a meaningful career, serving YMCAs in this region for more than 35 years. I am proud to lend my time and experience to the team at YGBW.”
Service to Youth Award
State Senator Carolyn Comitta was honored with the Service to Youth Award for her work on affordable childcare and STEM education initiatives. Comitta emphasized her commitment to supporting the next generation, stating, “We have a duty to leave behind a cleaner, safer, and healthier world for our next generation.” YGBW Chief Branch Operating Officer Terri Edgar credited the Senator for her tireless efforts, saying, “Her support of STEM education and career pathways impacts our community in the best way possible.”
Community Partner Award
Truist was recognized with the Community Partner Award for its unwavering dedication to partnering with YGBW. Chad Leyden, Market President at Truist, reflected on the organization’s philanthropic role, stating, “We are proud to support the work being done at the Y to strengthen the fabric of our community.” YGBW CFO Rachel Firkser highlighted Truist’s important contributions, including their support of financial initiatives and educational funding.
Branch Volunteer Recognition
Twenty-three individuals from YGBW’s branches were honored for their efforts in various roles that enhance youth programs, support healthy living, and promote social responsibility. Volunteers from the Coatesville, Jennersville, Kennett, Lionville, Octorara, Oscar Lasko, Upper Main Line, and West Chester Area branches were celebrated for their dedication.
“The YMCA would not exist without volunteers,” concluded Lawson. “We are extremely grateful for our 5,015 volunteers who give their time, talent, and treasure to the Y – in support of the Chester County community.”
The Breakfast of Champions underscored YGBW’s legacy of volunteerism, shining a spotlight on individuals and organizations whose efforts continue to make a measurable difference in the lives of families and children.
