NEWARK, DE — A Bear man has been charged after investigators alleged he attempted to break into multiple homes in a Newark-area neighborhood last month.
According to the New Castle County Division of Police, officers responded at approximately 2:45 p.m. on May 26 to the unit block of Oak View Drive in the Thornwood community for a reported attempted burglary.
Detectives allege that between approximately 12:45 p.m. and 1 p.m., a suspect walked through several backyards in the unit blocks of Oak View Drive and Alanrose Court and peered into the windows of multiple residences.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly cut a window screen, broke a window, and attempted to enter homes. Police said the attempts were unsuccessful and that no residences were entered.
On June 3, police released information seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect.
Authorities said information received from the public led investigators to identify the suspect as 33-year-old Brendin Viering of Bear.
According to police, Viering turned himself in later that day at New Castle County Police Headquarters.
Viering was charged with two felony counts of attempted second-degree burglary, two misdemeanor counts of attempted theft under $1,500, and two misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief under $1,000.
Court records show Viering was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released after posting $17,200 unsecured bail.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
