What Led to a Violent Assault Charge in Wilmington?

WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington man is facing a felony assault charge after a dispute in a residential neighborhood allegedly left an older man hospitalized with multiple injuries.

According to the New Castle County Division of Police, officers responded to the 1500 block of Willis Place in the Cleland Heights community at approximately 10:41 p.m. on June 3 for a report of a fight in progress.

Investigators identified the suspect as 26-year-old Jamir Garvin of Wilmington. Police allege Garvin became involved in an altercation with a 64-year-old man on Willis Place.

According to investigators, Garvin allegedly punched the victim in the face and stomped on the victim’s head multiple times before fleeing the area.

Officers and emergency medical personnel rendered aid to the victim at the scene, police said. The victim was transported to Christiana Hospital for treatment of multiple injuries and is expected to recover.

After identifying Garvin, officers responded to his residence and took him into custody without incident, according to authorities. Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Unit later assumed the investigation.

Garvin was charged with one felony count of first-degree assault and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.

Court records show Garvin was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $25,100 cash bail.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
