NEWARK, DE — A 17-year-old Glasgow High School student is facing multiple felony firearm charges after Delaware State Police said a loaded handgun was found in his backpack following a fight at the school Monday afternoon.
At approximately 1 p.m. Sept. 14, the school resource officer assigned to Glasgow High School, 1901 S. College Ave., responded to a reported fight in a hallway, according to state police.
Police said the officer and school staff intervened and separated the students involved, including the 17-year-old.
During the investigation, the school resource officer learned that the teenager had removed his backpack before the fight and that marijuana was allegedly inside, according to police.
A subsequent search of the backpack resulted in the recovery of a loaded handgun and a small quantity of marijuana, state police reported.
Police said the 17-year-old was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the fight. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and no other injuries were reported.
After being discharged from the hospital, the student was taken to Delaware State Police Troop 2, according to police.
The teenager was charged with felony counts of possession of a firearm by a person under 21, possession of ammunition for a firearm by a person under 21, possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was also charged with possession of marijuana under 18.
The 17-year-old was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families on $87,000 cash bond, according to state police.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
