PHILADELPHIA, PA — As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more prevalent in the workplace, many American employees express a need for training to feel comfortable using the technology. A recent survey by Yoh, a talent and outsourcing company, found that nearly a third (30%) of employed Americans would feel more at ease with AI in their jobs if they received proper training. Additionally, 31% of respondents indicated they would attend classes or seminars to learn about AI if offered.

The survey, conducted online by The Harris Poll from July 9-11, 2024, included 1,249 adults employed either full or part-time. It also highlighted that AI training could be a significant factor in the recruitment process. Over one-fifth (22%) of employed Americans said they would prefer to work for companies that offer AI training as part of their employee development programs. Furthermore, 19% expressed a desire to work for companies that integrate AI and automation software into their operations.

However, the survey also revealed concerns about AI in the workplace. About 25% of respondents believe that job descriptions should mention the use of AI if applicable. Another 19% want to know the extent of AI usage in a company before accepting a job offer. Concerns about the level of AI required in future roles and the lack of knowledge to use AI effectively were each cited by 17% of respondents.

“These survey results show that without offering proper levels of AI training throughout an organization, companies will have difficulty not only getting employees to feel comfortable using AI technologies in their day-to-day work but also in attracting new employees to their organization,” said Emmett McGrath, President of Yoh. “By investing in appropriate training and onboarding processes for AI, employers can increase job satisfaction, improve the effectiveness of their employees, and enhance their recruiting and hiring efforts.”

The survey also pointed out interesting demographic trends:

  • Younger workers (ages 18-44) are more interested in working for companies that use AI compared to those aged 55-64.
  • Employees with higher household incomes ($100K or more) are more likely to feel comfortable with AI training than those earning less than $75K.
  • Younger employees (ages 18-54) prefer hands-on AI learning opportunities more than older employees (ages 55-64).
  • Employees with a college degree are more inclined to take AI classes or seminars than those with less formal education.

As AI continues to integrate into various job functions, these findings suggest that companies should prioritize AI training to support their workforce and attract new talent.
