Overnight I-95 Shutdowns Raise Concern as Center City Construction Intensifies

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Northbound I-95 through Center City will face a series of full overnight closures next week as crews remove barriers and apply new line striping for the latest phase of PennDOT’s $329 million I-95 CAP project.

Weather permitting, northbound lanes will shut down from Monday, December 1, through Thursday, December 4, between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM. The closure will extend from the Washington Avenue/Columbus Boulevard exit (Exit 20) to just north of the Central Philadelphia/Callowhill Street exit (Exit 22).

During those hours, drivers will be directed off the highway at Exit 20 and guided along Columbus Boulevard to reenter I-95 northbound at Summer Street. PennDOT is urging motorists to use an alternate route or build in extra travel time, warning that significant delays are likely along the detour.

The overnight work supports the broader I-95 CAP initiative, which will replace and expand the covered section of the interstate between Chestnut and Walnut Streets, creating new public space and improving infrastructure above the highway.
