PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers using Interstate 95 in Southwest Philadelphia should prepare for overnight lane closures next week as crews continue work on the Girard Point Bridge rehabilitation project. Motorists should plan extra time and expect delays as barriers are installed to support a long-term traffic pattern.
At a Glance
- Roads Affected: Northbound and southbound Interstate 95
- Dates: Monday, July 20, through Friday, July 24
- Times: 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the following morning, with double-lane closures beginning at midnight
- Reason: Bridge construction and barrier placement
Northbound I-95 will be reduced to a single lane between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) from Monday, July 20, through Friday, July 24. A second lane will close beginning at midnight each night for barrier placement.
Southbound I-95 will be reduced to a single lane between Broad Street (Route 611) and Enterprise Avenue from Wednesday, July 22, through Friday, July 24. Double-lane closures will be in effect from midnight until 5:00 a.m.
No detour has been announced. Drivers should reduce speed through the work zone and seek alternate routes when practical.
The barriers are being installed as part of a long-term traffic pattern that will maintain three travel lanes during peak travel periods while allowing construction to continue during overnight and weekend hours. PennDOT indicated future lane restrictions will be coordinated with major events at the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.
The $261.5 million project will rehabilitate the 5,183-foot, double-deck Girard Point Bridge and nine approach structures between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611). Planned improvements include bridge deck rehabilitation, replacement of bridge barriers, steel and concrete repairs, upgraded lighting and drainage systems, scour protection at the Schuylkill River pier, and Intelligent Transportation Systems upgrades.
All scheduled work is weather dependent and may be postponed or rescheduled.
