Overnight I-95 Closures Return for Girard Point Bridge Work

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Construction on the Interstate 95 Girard Point Bridge rehabilitation project resumes Thursday, bringing several nights of lane closures that are expected to slow traffic through Southwest Philadelphia. Motorists traveling between Enterprise Avenue and Broad Street (Route 611) should plan extra time and expect delays as crews establish new work zones.

On Friday night, July 17, northbound I-95 will be reduced to a single lane beginning at 9:00 p.m., followed by a double-lane closure from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Saturday. The single-lane restriction will remain in place until 8:00 a.m.

On Saturday night, July 18, the same pattern will shift to southbound I-95. A single lane will close at 9:00 p.m., with two lanes closed from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Sunday. The remaining lane restriction will continue until 9:00 a.m.

If weather or other conditions delay the work, PennDOT says the northbound closures could move to Saturday night and the southbound closures to Sunday night.

Following the initial setup, crews will install concrete barriers to create protected work zones. During the first stage of construction, motorists should also expect periodic overnight lane closures on weeknights from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. and weekends from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Traffic patterns will also change once the work zones are in place. Northbound traffic will shift three lanes to the right so crews can rehabilitate the left lane and shoulder, while southbound traffic will shift three lanes to the left to allow work on the right lane and shoulder.

The $261.5 million project will rehabilitate the 5,183-foot, double-deck Girard Point Bridge and nine approach structures. Planned improvements include bridge deck repairs, replacement of concrete barriers, steel and substructure rehabilitation, upgraded lighting and drainage, pier protection in the Schuylkill River, and new Intelligent Transportation Systems equipment.

PennDOT advises motorists to expect backups through the construction zone, allow extra travel time, and seek alternate routes whenever possible. All work is weather dependent.
