PHILADELPHIA, PA — Get ready to plunge into winter fun! On February 24, 2024, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., Philadelphia Parks & Recreation is hosting the second annual Philly Phreeze, a one-day-only winter pool plunge at Kelly Pool. This unique event invites intrepid Philadelphians to brave the icy waters, all in the name of community support.

The Philly Phreeze isn’t just about the thrill of diving into freezing water; it’s a cause that resonates deeply with the city’s residents. Last year’s inaugural event saw over 150 participants take the plunge, raising a whopping $70,000 to support end-of-summer bonuses for City lifeguards. The funds also went a long way in ensuring all of Philadelphia’s 60+ public pools opened safely.

This year, the stakes are even higher. To open all the available pools, the Parks & Rec Department needs 400 lifeguards. By fundraising a minimum of $50, individuals can join their neighbors in taking the plunge and supporting Philly pools.

Here are five reasons why you should consider being a part of the Philly Phreeze pool plunge:

  1. Community Support: Help keep Philadelphia’s public pools safe and accessible by aiding in the recruitment of lifeguards.
  2. Make a Splash for a Cause: Your participation supports pool programming and helps provide end-of-summer bonuses of up to $1000 for lifeguards.
  3. Bring Friends Closer: Bond with friends in an unforgettable way by plunging into water that is 38°F and below!
  4. Earn Bragging Rights: Dare to brave the “phreezing” waters and become one of the few, the proud, and the brave.
  5. Feel Refreshed and Energized: Skip your daily cup of coffee. You’ll feel alert and invigorated after your plunge.
