Bridge Work on Route 100 to Cause Extended Traffic Delays

Road work

WEST GOSHEN TWP, PA — Motorists driving through West Goshen Township in Chester County should prepare for significant delays on Route 100 (Pottstown Pike) as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) begins superstructure replacement on the bridge over U.S. 322 (West Chester Bypass).

Starting Monday, May 6, and continuing through late December, Route 100 will undergo a continuous traffic shift between Taylors Mill Road and Goshen Road, affecting travel in both directions, 24/7. In the initial weeks of construction, drivers should anticipate periodic 15-minute traffic holds from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM as new traffic patterns are established.

PennDOT urges travelers to account for extra time in their schedules when passing through the area, warning of likely backups and delays due to the construction activities. The schedule for these necessary repairs is contingent on weather conditions, adding a layer of uncertainty to any travel plans through this corridor.

The necessity for this extensive project arose after a significant incident on December 21, 2023, when a large vehicle collision with the Route 100 bridge over U.S. 322 resulted in its immediate closure. Subsequent repairs addressed the immediate damage to the structure and cleared debris from U.S. 322, but ongoing shoulder closures on Route 100 highlight the need for thorough reconstruction.

The Route 100 bridge, constructed in 1955, spans 77 feet in length and 80 feet in width. It is a vital artery, carrying approximately 15,691 vehicles daily. The upcoming work not only addresses the aftermath of the recent accident but also aims to modernize and ensure the long-term functionality of this crucial infrastructure piece.

Travelers and residents can expect the construction to impact daily commutes, errands, and travel plans significantly. Patience and planning will be essential as PennDOT works to enhance safety and travel efficiency on these busy routes.
