WILMINGTON, DE — Chase is offering 5% cash back on gas, electric vehicle charging, public transit, select entertainment purchases and donations to United Way during the third quarter, a move aimed at capturing seasonal spending as consumers increase travel and leisure activity during the summer months.
The rewards promotion applies to holders of the Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex credit cards from July 1 through Sept. 30, with enhanced rewards capped at $1,500 in combined purchases across the eligible categories, the company said.
The quarterly rotating-category program is a key component of Chase’s strategy to drive card usage in categories where consumer spending typically rises during the summer, including transportation, entertainment and tourism-related activities.
Eligible transit purchases include trains, buses, ferries, tolls, parking facilities and other public transportation services. The entertainment category covers select live events, including concerts, sporting events, zoos and amusement parks.
The inclusion of electric vehicle charging alongside traditional gas station purchases reflects continued growth in EV adoption and the increasing role of charging infrastructure in consumer transportation spending.
Cardholders can also earn the elevated rewards rate on donations made through official United Way channels. Chase noted that cardmembers must activate the categories by Sept. 14 to receive the bonus rewards.
“That’s the idea behind our Q3 categories: we want to reward routine spending cardmembers are already doing this summer,” Wittney Rachlin, general manager of Chase Freedom, said.
The rotating-category promotion supplements the Freedom Flex card’s standard rewards structure, which includes 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Travel, 3% on dining and drugstore purchases, and 1% on other spending.
Chase is also continuing a limited-time acquisition offer for new Freedom Flex customers, providing a $200 bonus after $500 in purchases during the first three months following account opening.
The third-quarter categories take effect July 1 and run through Sept. 30.
