ELKINS PARK, PA — One of the Philadelphia region’s most storied Gilded Age estates will welcome the public inside for the first time in 84 years this fall, when Lynnewood Hall hosts a 10-day floral exhibition inspired by HBO’s The Gilded Age.
Fleurs de Villes THE GILDED AGE will run from Sept. 25 through Oct. 4, transforming the historic mansion with fresh floral mannequins inspired by characters, costumes and storylines from the series. Philadelphia-area floral designers will create each installation using thousands of fresh blooms.
The exhibition will mark a major milestone for Lynnewood Hall, which has remained largely closed to the public for decades while preservation and restoration efforts continue.
“We’re delighted to bring Fleurs de Villes THE GILDED AGE to Lynnewood Hall, one of the most extraordinary surviving estates of the Gilded Age,” said Karen Marshall, co-founder of Fleurs de Villes. “Its remarkable architecture and rich history create the perfect backdrop for celebrating the beauty, artistry and storytelling of HBO’s The Gilded Age.”
Among the floral creations will be interpretations of Bertha Russell’s Metropolitan Opera triumph, Peggy Scott’s engagement celebration, Marian Brook and Larry Russell’s romance, and Agnes van Rhijn’s defense of old New York society.
The one-of-a-kind mannequins are designed to blend period fashion, floral artistry and storytelling throughout the estate, giving fans of the series and history lovers alike a chance to explore the mansion in a new way.
Visitors will also be able to vote for their favorite floral mannequin, watch live floral demonstrations and add an optional Preservation Tour for a closer look at Lynnewood Hall’s history and ongoing restoration.
Edward Thome, executive director of the Lynnewood Hall Preservation Foundation, called the public opening “a milestone in one of America’s most significant preservation stories.”
“Every guest becomes part of Lynnewood Hall’s next chapter,” Thome said, adding that proceeds and public engagement will help support the estate’s restoration and preservation.
The exhibition is the third stop on a six-venue national tour bringing Fleurs de Villes THE GILDED AGE to historic estates and gardens across the United States.
