NEW CASTLE, DE — Two men face multiple charges after Delaware State Police allege they fled from troopers in a stolen SUV early Wednesday, leading to a pursuit, a crash and an alleged break-in at an occupied New Castle home.
Police identified the defendants as Jakyi Williams, 20, of Wilmington, and Halil Taylor, 19, of New Castle.
At approximately 12:10 a.m. Aug. 5, a trooper patrolling East Basin Road near North Dupont Highway conducted a registration check on an Infiniti QX60, according to state police. The check indicated the SUV had recently been reported stolen to the New Castle County Police Department.
Troopers attempted to stop the Infiniti as it approached Bellanch Street and 14th Street, but police allege the driver failed to stop. A pursuit continued through several area streets before the SUV crashed into a parked trailer on West 7th Street near Center Street, according to investigators.
Police allege Williams, who investigators identified as the driver, and Taylor, identified as the passenger, then fled on foot. Troopers located Williams in a nearby alley and took him into custody without further incident.
As law enforcement continued searching for Taylor, police received a report from a resident in the 600 block of Clymer Street that someone had entered the home and was allegedly attempting to access a bedroom where an infant was sleeping.
Responding officers located Taylor inside the residence and took him into custody without further incident, state police reported. No one inside the home was injured.
Investigators subsequently searched the Infiniti and reported finding more than 140 grams of suspected marijuana.
Williams was taken to Troop 2 and charged with felony receiving stolen property over $1,500, felony disregarding a police officer signal, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana other than a personal-use quantity, possession of a personal-use quantity of marijuana while under 21 and multiple related traffic offenses.
Following arraignment by the Justice of the Peace Court, Williams was committed to the Delaware Department of Correction on $2,505 cash bond, according to state police.
Taylor was charged with felony first-degree burglary of an occupied dwelling, felony receiving stolen property over $1,500, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana other than a personal-use quantity and possession of a personal-use quantity of marijuana while under 21.
Taylor was arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Delaware Department of Correction on $22,701 cash bond, police reported.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
