CONSHOHOCKEN, PA — Cencora is launching a multi-site pilot of an upgraded inventory management platform for specialty physician practices, a move aimed at helping providers manage increasingly complex and costly medication workflows as specialty drug utilization continues to expand.
The pharmaceutical services company will deploy the enhanced version of its Nucleus inventory management system across more than 20 practice sites, using the pilot to evaluate performance before a broader rollout later this year.
The initiative targets a growing operational challenge for specialty care providers, which must manage high-cost therapies, patient-specific inventory requirements and increasingly complex reimbursement processes while maintaining efficient clinical operations.
The updated platform combines new physical infrastructure with software enhancements designed to improve visibility into inventory levels, patient-specific medication needs and workflow management.
Among the changes are modular storage cabinets, larger touchscreen displays, expanded workspace functionality and a redesigned user interface intended to streamline inventory-related tasks for clinical and administrative staff.
The enhancements build on existing Nucleus capabilities, including real-time inventory tracking, demand forecasting, automated billing support and reporting tools used to monitor utilization and costs.
Lisa Smith, senior vice president and president of specialty distribution and solutions at Cencora, indicated the redesign was developed with input from specialty providers and focused on improving operational decision-making.
“The way inventory moves through a practice has a direct impact on both operational performance and patient care,” Smith stated.
The pilot reflects broader efforts across healthcare to improve management of specialty medications, a category that accounts for a growing share of pharmaceutical spending and often requires more sophisticated storage, tracking and administration processes than traditional therapies.
Camilo Rodriguez, director of pharmacy operations at American Oncology Network and a member of a Cencora advisory board, pointed to the increasing complexity facing providers as specialty treatments evolve.
“As specialty therapies continue to evolve at a rapid pace, clinical care teams are managing increasing levels of complexity across clinical, financial and operational workflows,” Rodriguez stated.
Cencora plans to use feedback from participating sites to refine the system before expanding production and installation. The company expects broader availability for existing and new customers following completion of the pilot program.
