WEST CHESTER, PA — Bournelyf Special Camp opened a replacement swimming pool July 23 after receiving the largest individual contribution in its history from alumnus Andrew Bentley, expanding accessible aquatic programming as the organization prepares a broader capital campaign for 2027.

The new pool replaces an aging facility that was no longer functional and is designed to accommodate swimmers with varying abilities.

Programming will include water-safety instruction, physical activity, skill development and recreation for campers with disabilities, according to the organization.

Bentley joined members of his family to cut the ribbon during Bournelyf’s annual camp luncheon, attended by campers, families and supporters.

“Andrew’s generosity is an investment in the safety, confidence and potential of every camper we serve,” Executive Director Courtney Zimmerman stated. “It has helped create a place where our campers can learn critical water-safety skills, experience greater independence and discover the joy of accomplishing something new.”

The pool’s completion coincides with growing demand for Bournelyf’s programs. The organization reported that 2026 registrations are exceeding last year’s pace, while year-round events regularly reach capacity and school-holiday programs frequently fill shortly after opening.

In spring 2027, Bournelyf plans to launch The Campaign for the Next 50 Years: Building Communities & Empowering Lives.

The campaign will seek support for a dedicated accessible program building, additional campus improvements and expanded year-round programming.

Bentley has also supported other disability-service organizations. Earlier this year, he made the largest individual donation received in a decade by Thorndale-based Handi-Crafters, supporting vocational training, employment and community connections for adults with disabilities.

Bournelyf also cited the history of community support provided by Chester County-based Bentley Systems.

“The opening of this pool shows what is possible when people believe in our campers and invest in their potential,” Zimmerman stated.
