PennDOT announced that construction has been completed on the $12.1 million project to replace the Brownsville Road bridge over Neshaminy Creek in Lower Southampton and Middletown townships. The bridge and roadway reopened to traffic this week.

The project was originally expected to take 34 months. According to PennDOT, the accelerated schedule was made possible through coordination among state and local officials and the decision to detour traffic and temporarily close the bridge during construction.

The former 68-year-old concrete box beam bridge was replaced with a new structure measuring 278 feet long and 41 feet wide. The replacement bridge is approximately 24 feet longer and 10 feet wider than the previous span.

PennDOT said the bridge’s vertical alignment was raised to improve the waterway opening over Neshaminy Creek and enhance sight distances for approaching motorists. The new design also reduces the number of piers in the waterway, helping improve flow beneath the structure.

Additional improvements included widening roadway shoulders, upgrading stormwater management systems, resurfacing the roadway approaches, and installing scour protection around bridge piers and abutments.

While this project marks the end of a major construction effort for area motorists, the reopening restores a direct connection between Lower Southampton and Middletown townships and eliminates the need for the detours that had been in place during construction.
