LANCASTER COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced planned lane and ramp closures as part of the Route 30/Route 222 Interchange Improvement Project in Lancaster County. These restrictions are necessary to facilitate traffic switches onto the newly constructed southbound Route 222 bridge.

Weather permitting, work will commence on Monday, May 5, with closures scheduled for the right lane of westbound Route 30 and the ramp from westbound Route 30 to northbound Route 222. These closures will last from 9:00 PM Monday to 6:00 AM Tuesday, May 6. A detour will direct traffic west to the Fruitville Pike Exit before returning eastbound on Route 30 and heading north on Route 222.

Closures will continue the following evening on Tuesday, May 6, with the left lane of southbound Route 222 and the ramp from southbound Route 222 to eastbound Route 30 closed between 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM Wednesday, May 7. Southbound traffic will be rerouted via westbound Route 30 to the Fruitville Pike Exit, then returning eastbound on Route 30.

Additional closures are planned for Monday, May 12, from 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM Tuesday, May 13. This will affect the right lane of eastbound Route 30 and the ramp to northbound Route 222. Eastbound traffic will follow a detour continuing to the Route 23 east (New Holland Avenue) Exit before returning west to access northbound Route 222.

The final traffic switch will place all northbound and southbound Route 222 traffic onto the new southbound bridge. PennDOT has indicated that the existing northbound bridge demolition will occur in the fall.

This extensive project, valued at $72,173,900 and carried out by JD Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, involves significant upgrades at the interchange. Key components include lane expansions, bridge replacements, and the addition of new ramps to improve traffic flow. Route 222, spanning approximately one mile north of the interchange near Stoner Park, will be widened from four lanes to six lanes. Meanwhile, new lanes will be added to ramps connecting eastbound and westbound Route 30 to Route 222.

Four lanes of traffic will be maintained throughout the project timeline, with drivers urged to exercise caution in work zones. Completion is expected by September 3, 2027.
