PENNSYLVANIA — Dog owners have been reminded to purchase their annual dog licenses for 2024 before January 1, to comply with state law and avoid the upcoming price increase. All dogs, three months or older, must be licensed by the start of each year, with licenses valid from January 1 through December 31, regardless of when purchased.

The 2024 dog licenses are now available, and securing one early will ensure that dog owners start the new year off on the right paw. Prices vary slightly, depending on whether the dog is spayed or neutered, with discounts available for senior citizens and people with disabilities. Lifetime licenses, which require the dog to be tattooed or micro-chipped, are also an option.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro signed the bipartisan Dog Law Modernization Act into law in October 2023. The law, taking effect on January 21, 2024, provides updated protections for dogs, including the first increase in licensing fees in 27 years. It also introduces increased penalties for unlicensed dogs and negligent kennels and dog owners. The raised fees will help fully fund the state Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement.

To purchase a dog license online with a credit/debit card or e-check, owners can visit the PA Dog License website. Upon completion of payment, a proof of license can be printed, and the license and tag will be mailed the following business day. For duplicate tags, license transfers, a printed application, and more, owners can visit the Treasurer’s Office web page.

Early licensing ensures that dog owners are compliant with state laws and avoids the increase in fees set for February 2024. It’s the perfect holiday gift for dogs and their owners, providing peace of mind and contributing to the well-being of all dogs in Pennsylvania.
