HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced the opening of the application period for grants under the Rail Transportation Assistance Program (RTAP) and the Rail Freight Assistance Program (RFAP).
Pennsylvania leads the nation with 65 operating railroads and ranks among the top states in total track mileage, boasting over 5,600 miles. These railroads are critical for the state’s transportation infrastructure, facilitating the movement of goods and contributing to the economy.
In 2023, the Shapiro Administration awarded $42.5 million for 25 rail freight projects, supporting over 300 jobs across the state. This funding underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing rail freight infrastructure and promoting economic growth through improved transportation services.
PennDOT administers two key grant programs to support these goals. The RTAP is a capital budget grant program funded through bonds, aimed at supporting large-scale rail infrastructure projects. Meanwhile, the RFAP is funded by the Multimodal Fund, established by Act 89 of 2013, and provides financial assistance for smaller-scale projects. Both programs aim to preserve essential rail freight services and stimulate economic development by expanding or enhancing rail freight operations.
Eligible organizations are encouraged to apply for these grants to invest in rail infrastructure and promote economic growth. The application window is open now through 4:00 PM on Friday, August 30. Interested parties can submit their applications via the designated application website.
By investing in rail infrastructure, Pennsylvania aims to maintain its leadership in the rail freight sector and ensure the continued efficiency and reliability of its transportation network. These grants provide an opportunity for significant improvements in rail services, benefiting businesses and communities across the Commonwealth.
