MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology Inc. (NYSE: VSH) introduced a proximity sensor that is 44% smaller than its previous-generation devices, targeting manufacturers of wireless earbuds, smart glasses and virtual reality headsets seeking to reduce component size, power consumption and production costs.
The VCNL36829UM detects objects up to 50 millimeters away and is designed to determine whether users are wearing a device. Additional applications include touchless dispensers and lid-detection systems in consumer appliances.
The sensor measures 1.6 millimeters by 1.0 millimeter by 0.35 millimeter and combines a laser, photodiode, integrated circuit and analog-to-digital converter within a single package.
Its idle current falls to 5 microamps, helping extend battery life in compact consumer electronics. The device operates at a supply voltage between 1.65 and 2.0 volts and provides 14-bit proximity resolution.
Vishay reported that the sensor withstands sunlight exposure of up to 200 kilolux, improving its ability to operate under bright outdoor conditions. Its laser operates at a 940-nanometer wavelength without producing visible red light.
The component’s dual-address interface allows manufacturers to connect two proximity sensors without installing a multiplexer, reducing hardware requirements and associated costs.
A programmable interrupt function also reduces communication with a device’s microcontroller, lowering overall power consumption. Additional design features limit interference and improve detection response times.
Samples and production quantities are available immediately, with lead times of 15 weeks, according to Vishay.
