Vishay Cuts Capacitor Footprint 40% for Industrial Designs

Vishay Intertechnology

MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) introduced a surface-mount series of Y1 safety capacitors that requires up to 40% less board space than its previous-generation devices, targeting manufacturers seeking to shrink industrial and power-electronics designs while simplifying assembly.

The Vishay BCcomponents SMDY1…S series combines a Y1 rating of 300 VAC and 1500 VDC with a surface-mount package designed for electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference suppression and filtering.

The capacitors comply with IEC 60384-14 and carry UL, CSA, VDE, ENEC and CQC certifications. Their Y1 rating permits use across double or reinforced insulation, while the devices can operate in DC networks up to 1500 VDC under IEC standard Annex H.

Vishay is positioning the components for industrial motor drives, welding equipment, inverters, uninterruptible power supplies, rail power supplies, HVAC systems and LED drivers. Other potential applications include smart-home automation, computer switch-mode power supplies, AC/DC converters, household appliances and automotive charging stations.

The series provides insulation resistance of at least 10,000 MΩ, compared with an industry standard cited by Vishay of 6,000 MΩ. Its operating temperature range extends from -55°C to +125°C, versus the -40°C to +125°C industry range cited by the company.

Vishay also designed the surface-mount components for pick-and-place assembly and reflow soldering. That approach eliminates manual soldering steps associated with through-hole components, potentially reducing manufacturing complexity and production costs.

Each component undergoes end-of-line testing covering AC voltage, capacitance, dissipation factor, insulation resistance and visual inspection, according to the company.

The RoHS-compliant and halogen-free capacitors use a copper- and silver-plated ceramic disc with flame-resistant epoxy resin encapsulation meeting UL 94 V-0 requirements.

Vishay is offering the series in two case sizes. The A size covers capacitance values from 10 pF to 680 pF, while the B size ranges from 1,000 pF to 1,500 pF.
