Chester County, home to over half a million people, has earned itself a top spot on a list that everyone can cheer about. According to data from the 2023 PLACES report by the CDC, examined in partnership with Northwell Health and Stacker, Chester County is the most physically active county in Pennsylvania. With a whopping 82.5% of adults reporting some form of physical activity, the county is setting a remarkable example of a healthy lifestyle.

Regular physical activity is not just about keeping the body fit; it’s also about maintaining mental health. Despite the known benefits, almost one in five adults in the U.S. admits to not engaging in any physical exercise during a typical week, according to a 2021 Ipsos report. This statistic makes Chester County’s achievement even more commendable.

Income often plays a significant role in a person’s ability to engage in regular physical activity. Lower-income individuals may face multiple barriers such as lack of access to safe public spaces for exercise, inability to afford gym memberships or workout equipment, and less flexible work schedules. A study conducted in 2018 found that men, white people, and those from higher-income families were more likely to participate in physical activity among adolescents and young adults.

Interestingly, the Peter G. Peterson Foundation reported that households in Northeastern and Western states earned an average of $7,000 to $15,000 more annually than their counterparts in the Midwest and South, respectively. These regions also reported higher rates of physical activity.

So, what makes Chester County stand out? It could be the county’s commitment to providing accessible public parks and recreational facilities. Perhaps it’s the culture of active living that has been cultivated in the community. Or maybe it’s the county’s relative affluence that allows residents to have more leisure time and resources to devote to physical activity.

Regardless of the reasons, this recognition is a testament to Chester County’s commitment to fostering a culture of health and wellness among its residents. It serves as an inspiration for other communities and a reminder that regular physical activity should be a priority for all.

However, it’s essential to remember that having access to physical activity opportunities is a privilege not enjoyed by everyone. While we celebrate Chester County’s achievement, let’s also use this as a moment to reflect on how we can make physical fitness more accessible for all Pennsylvanians, regardless of their income level.

In the end, the goal is not just to have more physically active counties but to create a state—and eventually a country—where everyone has an equal opportunity to lead a healthy, active life. Chester County has set the pace; now, it’s up to the rest of us to follow suit.
