IMMACULATA UNIVERSITY, PA — Immaculata University senior Ava Thorley, of Downingtown, Pennsylvania was awarded the prestigious Saint Catherine of Alexandria Medal for 2023-2024. The Medal was presented to Thorley by President Barbara Lettiere ’72 during the Mass of the Holy Spirit on August 31.

Kappa Gamma Pi, a national honor society for graduates of Catholic colleges, sponsors the Medal that is named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, who represents wisdom, fortitude and Christian service. The Medal is given to a student at the conclusion of his/her junior year who is selected by University faculty and leadership on the basis of scholarship, leadership and service to the institution.

“I am incredibly honored and grateful to have been chosen as this year’s award recipient,” Thorley stated. “Immaculata has provided me with an exceptional education along with strong peer and faculty relationships. My faith is a very important part of my life, and receiving this Medal shows me that God is truly working through me.”

Thorley attended Bishop Shanahan High School before enrolling at Immaculata as an elementary and special education major. During her time at Immaculata, she has consistently made the dean’s list and has been a four-year member of the women’s volleyball team, serving as team captain during her junior year. This season, she serves as the team’s secretary and seeks re-election as captain. In addition to her athletic endeavors, Thorley will be conducting her student-teaching at St. Joseph School in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, where she and her family are parishioners.

“It has been my pleasure having Ava in my education classes over the past three years and watching her grow into a kind and caring teacher as she begins student teaching this fall,” stated Karen Miscavage,   Ed. D., associate professor of Education. “The three characteristics of what would be used to describe a St. Catherine Medal award winner, wisdom, fortitude, and Christian service, I see in Ava when she talks about her experiences and begins the last part of her journey in becoming an excellent teacher.”
