WEST CHESTER, PA — Chester County residents face several days of dangerous heat and humidity through Saturday, with heat index values expected to reach between 100 and 110 degrees and temperatures climbing above 100 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for southeast Pennsylvania through 8 p.m. Saturday, warning that prolonged high temperatures and warm overnight lows could significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly among vulnerable populations.

A Code Orange Air Quality Alert is also in effect Wednesday for the Philadelphia metropolitan area, including Chester County. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission said pollution levels may become unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions.

Forecasters expect the most dangerous conditions on Thursday and Friday, when temperatures could reach 101 degrees with heat index values as high as 108 degrees. Overnight lows are forecast to remain in the mid-70s to upper 70s, offering little relief from the heat.

The prolonged stretch of hot weather comes as many residents prepare for Independence Day activities, with Saturday’s forecast calling for a high near 98 degrees and a chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

The heat wave is expected to begin easing Sunday as a more unsettled weather pattern develops. Showers and thunderstorms are likely Sunday and Monday, with temperatures falling into the upper 80s and lower 90s by early next week.

The National Weather Service urged residents to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned spaces when possible, and avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

Officials also warned never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, noting that interior temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
