Tattoo Clue Leads Police to Candy Theft Suspect

MORGANTOWN, PA — A Berks County man has been charged with retail theft after investigators allegedly linked him to the theft of a large quantity of candy from a convenience store using surveillance footage, witness information, and a distinctive tattoo.

According to the Caernarvon Township Police Department, officers responded to a report of retail theft at the Sheetz convenience store on February 5.

Police said a store manager reported that an unidentified man entered the business, removed large quantities of candy from store shelves, concealed the merchandise, and left without paying.

Investigators reviewed store surveillance footage and alleged that the suspect arrived at approximately 1:04 p.m. in a white pickup truck bearing a “Home Genius” logo. According to police, the suspect partially concealed his face with a hood, placed multiple boxes of candy into a backpack, and left the store at approximately 1:18 p.m.

During the investigation, police traced the vehicle and contacted the owner of a company identified as Advanced Remodeling. According to investigators, the owner stated he had been at the store with 37-year-old Robert Alexander but was unaware of any alleged theft. Police said the owner identified Alexander as the individual seen in the surveillance footage.

Investigators also reported that a comparison of Alexander’s prior booking photographs revealed a tattoo on his right hand that appeared similar to one visible on the suspect captured on video.

Based on the investigation, Alexander was charged with retail theft. Police noted that he has prior retail theft convictions. The arrest was made on May 26.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
