WILMINGTON, DE — ChristianaCare is entering the final phase of its transition to the Epic electronic health record platform, with a systemwide launch scheduled for Oct. 3 that the health system expects will improve care coordination, streamline clinical workflows and expand digital services for patients.
The implementation will replace existing electronic health record systems with Epic, one of the nation’s most widely used healthcare information platforms. ChristianaCare indicated the rollout is designed to improve access to clinical information across care settings, reduce duplicate processes and strengthen continuity of care.
With fewer than three months remaining before the launch, the health system is focusing on caregiver training, operational readiness and testing to prepare clinical staff for the transition while minimizing disruptions to patient care.
“Our focus is on preparing our caregivers through a training model that combines convenient on-demand learning with live, role-based instruction,” Chief Operating Officer Ric Cuming stated. “We are taking a deliberate approach to help protect patient safety and maintain continuity of care.”
ChristianaCare noted staff will continue participating in role-specific training, workflow validation exercises and practice scenarios before the October implementation. Readiness checks are also being conducted to ensure employees complete required training before using the new system.
For patients, the transition includes the launch of ChristianaCare MyChart, Epic’s patient portal, which will provide online access to medical records, test results, appointment scheduling, secure messaging with care teams, prescription refill requests, electronic check-in and bill payment.
The health system advised patients to continue attending scheduled appointments unless they are contacted directly with updates related to the transition.
Once Epic goes live, ChristianaCare will also participate in Epic’s Care Everywhere network, allowing participating healthcare organizations to securely share patient information when individuals receive care outside the ChristianaCare system. The organization noted that all Delaware health systems, along with many providers across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland, will be using Epic, expanding the availability of shared clinical information across the region.
