Scooter Stop Uncovers Gun, Drugs, Police Allege

WILMINGTON, DE — An 18-year-old Wilmington man is facing multiple felony charges after a traffic stop involving an electric scooter allegedly led to the discovery of a handgun and marijuana, according to New Castle County police.

Police said patrol officers observed an individual operating an electric scooter commit a traffic violation at approximately 5:50 p.m. July 6 near the intersection of Governor Printz Boulevard and East Lea Boulevard.

According to police, officers conducted a traffic stop and identified the operator as Taron Pearce, 18, of Wilmington.

During the investigation, officers allegedly recovered a loaded 9mm handgun with an obliterated serial number, approximately 153 grams of marijuana and a digital scale from Pearce’s possession, police reported.

Pearce was taken into custody without incident and transported to New Castle County Police Headquarters. He was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a weapon with an obliterated serial number, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of marijuana and unlawful operation of a motorized scooter on a public highway.

Police said Pearce was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution after failing to post $45,525 cash bail.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
