Crash Probe Leads to Drug and DUI Charges in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DE — A Wilmington woman is facing felony drug and DUI charges after state police said a two-vehicle crash led troopers to find suspected drugs in her purse.

According to Delaware State Police, troopers responded at about 4:20 a.m. June 27 to the area of Centre and Faulkland roads for a report of a two-vehicle collision.

Police said one of the drivers, identified as Ricarda Sandoval, 28, of Wilmington, allegedly showed signs of impairment. A trooper administered standardized field sobriety tests and took Sandoval into custody without incident, according to state police.

During a subsequent search of Sandoval’s purse, troopers allegedly found approximately 11.5 grams of crack cocaine stored in 20 small plastic bags and approximately 5.64 grams of methamphetamine stored in eight small plastic bags, police said.

Sandoval was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver a Tier 2 quantity, possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of a controlled substance Tier 2 quantity, possession of a controlled substance Tier 1 quantity, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended or revoked, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, failure to have insurance identification in possession, inattentive driving and following a motor vehicle too closely.

Court records show Sandoval was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court and committed to Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution on $20,352 secured bond.

All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
