PHILADELPHIA, PA — From stepping inside a centuries-old penitentiary to strolling through historic markets and mansions, Philadelphia is turning history into a hands-on, citywide experience this weekend.
In celebration of International Day of Monuments and Sites, Global Philadelphia Association is inviting residents and visitors to explore the city’s rich past through a full day of free tours, special programs, and self-guided adventures across some of its most iconic locations.
The annual global observance highlights heritage, culture, and community—and in a city with 67 National Historic Landmarks, there’s no shortage of places to discover.
A Citywide Invitation to Explore
This year’s celebration transforms Philadelphia into an open-air classroom, with opportunities to dive into history at sites like Reading Terminal Market, Eastern State Penitentiary, Fairmount Water Works, and Girard College.
Many events are free or discounted, making it easy for families, history enthusiasts, and curious locals to participate. Visitors can join guided tours, attend cultural programs, or simply map out their own route through neighborhoods rich with stories.
“As Philadelphia prepares for America’s 250th anniversary, International Day of Monuments and Sites offers a powerful opportunity to reflect on the places and stories that define our city’s global significance,” said Zabeth Teelucksingh, President of Global Philadelphia Association. “We invite residents and visitors alike to explore our historic landmarks and deepen their connection to Philadelphia’s past.”
