WILMINGTON, DE — A 25-year-old Newark man died Monday from injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash at a Wilmington intersection late Sunday, according to the Delaware State Police, as investigators continue working to determine what caused the collision.

The crash occurred at about 11 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Main Street and Limestone Road, police said.

According to investigators, a Honda Passport was stopped at a red light in the outside turn lane on eastbound Main Street, preparing to turn left onto northbound Limestone Road. A Mazda CX-5 was stopped behind the Honda.

At the same time, the motorcyclist was operating a Kawasaki Ninja southbound on Limestone Road while approaching the right-turn lanes leading to westbound Main Street.

Police said the motorcycle failed to negotiate the turn for reasons that remain under investigation, continued straight, and struck the curb of a traffic island. The rider was ejected from the motorcycle before sliding underneath the stopped Honda, while his helmet struck the stopped Mazda.

The motorcyclist, a 25-year-old Newark resident, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said he died Monday, July 13, from injuries sustained in the crash. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.

The driver of the Honda, a 38-year-old Wilmington woman, and the driver of the Mazda, a 29-year-old Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, man, were not injured, according to police.

The roadway remained closed for about 3½ hours while investigators processed the scene and crews cleared the roadway.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate the crash. Anyone who witnessed the collision or has video related to the incident is asked to contact Master Cpl. R. Kunicki at (302) 365-8417. Tips may also be submitted anonymously through Delaware Crime Stoppers at (800) 847-3333.
