InterDigital Wins Second EU Patent Injunction Against Disney

InterDigital

WILMINGTON, DE — InterDigital Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) secured a second pan-European injunction against Disney over video-compression technology, expanding the patent dispute across 11 European Union countries while leaving the media company an avenue to appeal.

The Düsseldorf Local Division of the Unified Patent Court found that Disney infringed an InterDigital patent covering video-encoding techniques associated with high-efficiency video coding, or HEVC, InterDigital reported.

The court also upheld the patent’s validity. The resulting injunction applies in countries including France, Germany and Italy.

Disney may appeal the decision.

The ruling marks the second HEVC-related injunction InterDigital has obtained against Disney from the Unified Patent Court, which adjudicates patent disputes across participating European countries.

InterDigital has also won injunctions against Disney from national courts in Germany and Brazil, according to the company.

Those disputes involve patents covering high dynamic range technology, the overlay of multiple video streams, the transmission of video between devices and compression technologies associated with HEVC and advanced video coding.

“Encoding for HEVC is a key component of the high-quality, premium viewing experience that streaming companies like Disney use to justify higher subscription prices,” InterDigital Chief Legal Officer Josh Schmidt stated.
