PHILADELPHIA, PA — Instinct Science is preparing to expand access to Attending, an AI clinical assistant for veterinarians that draws from peer-reviewed veterinary references and is being tested by hundreds of clinicians before a broader rollout.
The system is designed to answer clinical questions in plain language while providing inline citations to veterinary reference material, including Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs, Standards of Care and Clinician’s Brief.
Instinct said dosing and other safety-critical information is retrieved directly from Plumb’s rather than generated by the AI model. The underlying reference material is continually updated by a team of more than 200 boarded specialists and pharmacists.
Attending has been used for several months by boarded specialists, emergency clinicians and general practitioners, including through a hospital-wide rollout at Schwarzman Animal Medical Center in New York.
“Attending has proved to be a useful resource for complex cases, questions, and for both personal learning and teaching,” said Dennis Slade, head of internal medicine at the medical center.
The product is currently available through an invitation-only research preview involving hundreds of veterinarians at U.S. centers.
Instinct plans to make Attending available in coming months as a stand-alone product and as an embedded tool within its Instinct EMR and ScribbleVet platforms.
Chief Executive Officer Caleb Frankel, an emergency veterinarian, said the system was built for situations in which clinicians face complex cases or medication questions without immediate specialist support.
“For a hundred years, clinical reference was a book on a shelf. Then it became digital and searchable,” Frankel said. “Attending is the next leap.”
Instinct Science also operates Plumb’s Veterinary Drugs, Standards of Care, Clinician’s Brief, Instinct EMR and ScribbleVet.
