GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA — Gwynedd Mercy University has created a new executive position focused on workforce partnerships and career-aligned education as colleges increasingly compete for adult learners and employer-driven training opportunities.

The university appointed Dr. Shawn Zakar as executive director for workforce development and innovation, an inaugural role designed to expand academic partnerships, continuing education programs, and workforce-focused initiatives tied to enrollment growth and employer demand.

University officials stated Zakar will oversee efforts to strengthen relationships with businesses and community organizations while developing academic and noncredit programs aligned with labor market needs.

Zakar most recently served as executive director of workforce education at Ocean County College, where he managed workforce programming in allied health, business, technology, workplace literacy, and grant-funded initiatives.

According to the university, Zakar previously led the development of stackable credential programs, customized corporate training offerings, and credit-aligned workforce education programs targeting adult learners.

“His work will directly complement our Academic Affairs strategy as we continue to innovate to the top, aligning academic programs with evolving workforce needs and expanding flexible, responsive pathways that meet both students and employers where they are,” GMercyU Provost Stephen Grieco stated.

The appointment comes as higher education institutions nationally face pressure to diversify revenue streams and expand career-connected programs tied more directly to workforce demand.
