WILMINGTON, DE — Wilmington police are investigating a series of vehicle break-ins and attempted vehicle thefts reported across multiple neighborhoods over the weekend after officers received dozens of calls from affected residents.
According to Wilmington police, officers received 28 calls for service on July 19 involving reported vehicle break-ins and attempted vehicle thefts. Investigators reported that some vehicles had broken windows or damaged door handles, while others showed damage to ignition columns that police say is consistent with attempted vehicle thefts.
Police reported incidents in the following areas:
- 18th and North Broom streets
- 600, 700 and 800 blocks of West 19th Street
- 600 block of West 20th Street
- 600 block of West 21st Street
- 2000 block of North Tatnall Street
- 2300 block of North Harrison Street
- 2300 and 2400 blocks of North Jefferson Street
- 800 block of McCabe Avenue
- 100 block of West 31st Street
According to police, additional patrols have been deployed in the affected areas in an effort to identify those responsible and deter further incidents.
The investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information or photo or video footage that may have captured possible suspects to contact investigators at (302) 654-5151. Digital evidence may also be submitted through the city’s online evidence portal at www.WilmingtonDE.gov/Footage.
Police also urged residents to report suspicious activity, including individuals seen pulling on vehicle door handles, by calling 911 or (302) 654-5151.
All suspects, arrestees, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
