Girard Avenue Bridge Repair to Cause Delays; Drivers Advised to Plan Ahead

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Attention, Philadelphia drivers! The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that repair work will start next week on the Girard Avenue Bridge, a crucial structure carrying U.S. 30 over the Schuylkill River and Kelly Drive.

Beginning Monday, February 26, and continuing through mid-April, a 24/7 right lane closure is scheduled on eastbound Girard Avenue between 34th Street and Sedgley Drive. In simpler terms, the right-most lane on this stretch will be closed off around the clock for the duration of the repair project.

This means drivers should brace themselves for potential traffic delays. With one less lane available for use, backups are likely to occur, especially during peak traffic hours. PennDOT advises those traveling through the work area to allow extra time for their journey.

A quick note on the bridge itself: built in 1972, the Girard Avenue Bridge spans 735 feet in length and 101 feet in width. This three-span, steel rigid-frame structure carries approximately 46,311 vehicles per day. Its repair and maintenance are crucial to ensure the safety and smooth operation of this busy thoroughfare.

As always with outdoor projects, the schedule is subject to weather conditions. Unfavorable weather could potentially alter the timing and duration of the work.

Ultimately, when planning your commute, remember to factor in possible delays. As always, drive safely, Philadelphia.
