Fatal Collision on I-95 Claims One Life, Injures Three

WILMINGTON, DE — A tragic motor vehicle accident on I-95 southbound at the I-495 split early Wednesday morning resulted in one fatality and left three others injured, including a child and two paramedics.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:33 a.m. as New Castle County Paramedics in a marked 2024 Ford F-350 vehicle were responding to an unrelated accident on the interstate’s left shoulder. While changing lanes with emergency lights activated to provide assistance, the paramedic vehicle collided with a 2013 Nissan Altima driven by 33-year-old Kierra West of Newark. West’s six-year-old male passenger was also in the vehicle.

The collision caused the paramedic vehicle to stop in a travel lane on I-95, while the Nissan came to rest on the left shoulder. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but West was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her young passenger was transported to Nemours Children’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The paramedic driver and passenger were taken to Christiana Hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.

The New Castle County Division of Police Traffic Services Unit is leading the investigation. Authorities are urging anyone with information or surveillance footage of the crash to come forward by contacting Detective Maloney at 302-395-8055 or the department’s non-emergency line at 302-573-2800.
