EXTON, PA — A revolutionary thinker whose democratic ideas preceded the Declaration of Independence will take center stage at Chester County Library when local historian Ed Auble explores the life and influence of General Pasquale di Paoli.

Presented by the Chester County Library Trust, the Aug. 19 program will examine how Paoli created a democratic constitution for Corsica in 1755 and how his political ideas helped influence early American thought. The program is part of the library community’s observance of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Auble brings both historical knowledge and a personal connection to the subject. He has visited nearly 70 countries, including Corsica, where Paoli was born and where Auble developed a deeper appreciation for the island’s history.

In 2025, Auble participated in a celebration marking the 300th anniversary of Paoli’s birth in Morosaglia. Paoli’s ancestral home now operates as a museum, while a chapel on the property holds his remains.

A Chester County resident, Auble is a retired finance professional who has served on numerous community boards and committees. He has taught at Immaculata University, graduated from Lafayette College and earned a master’s degree in international management.

Auble also served in the U.S. Navy, flying carrier-based combat missions during the Vietnam War. He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1981 with the rank of lieutenant commander.
