Arrest Made: Wilmington Resident Charged in Bank Robbery Case

NEWARK DE — The Delaware State Police announced the arrest of a 40-year-old  Wilmington, Delaware resident on Tuesday for a bank robbery that occurred in Newark last month.

Machel Whitaker has been charged with two counts of Robbery First Degree (Felony) and Wearing a Disguise During the Commission of a Felony (Felony).

The criminal complaint alleges that on June 24, 2023, at approximately 12:30 p.m., troopers responded to a bank robbery that occurred at the Citizens Bank inside of Acme located at 1 University Drive. During the robbery, the suspect presented a note and demanded money from the teller and the branch manager. He fled from the bank on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash and was not located.

Detectives from the Troop 2 Robbery Unit began investigating the case and were able to identify Machel Whitaker as the suspect. During the morning of July 11, 2023, detectives contacted Whitaker over the phone, and he turned himself in at Troop 2.

Whitaker was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a $52,000 cash bond.
