MONTGOMERYVILLE, PA — AES Cleanroom Technology has secured FM 4882 low-smoke approval for its modular cleanroom wall and ceiling panels, adding an independent certification aimed at reducing contamination and production-disruption risks in pharmaceutical and other smoke-sensitive facilities.
The Montgomeryville-based company’s panel system already carried FM 4880 Class 1 fire approval. The addition of FM 4882 means the products have now been evaluated for both fire performance and smoke generation under fire conditions, according to AES.
The distinction is particularly relevant in cleanroom operations, where smoke can contaminate products and equipment beyond the immediate area of a fire and potentially require decontamination and revalidation before production resumes.
FM 4882 evaluates panel assemblies for use in smoke-sensitive occupancies, including pharmaceutical manufacturing, storage facilities and cleanrooms. FM Approvals independently tests products against its protocols and requires continued conformity and manufacturing oversight to maintain approval.
AES Chief Executive Officer Chris Miller linked the certification to the operational risks faced by manufacturers producing therapies where disruptions can affect supply.
“Patients are the reason this matters,” Miller said. “Our clients make therapies that people depend on, and a contamination event does not just cost a facility; it interrupts supply to people with no alternative.”
The approval applies to four products within the AES Modular Cleanroom Wall and Panel System: AES Profile, a 2-inch modular wall panel; AES Adapt, a half-inch wall lining panel; AES Marquee, available as 2-inch and 3-inch ceiling panels; and AES Parasol, a half-inch ceiling panel.
AES stated that submittal and product data for the approved products are available now.
The company pursued the additional certification as cleanroom operators face requirements extending beyond structural fire protection to the potential contamination consequences of smoke inside controlled environments.
Shawn Reniker, AES senior vice president of operations, said the company developed a proprietary solution to meet the FM 4882 standard following continued product-development work.
“For an operator, that means less smoke released in an event, a smaller area to decontaminate, and a shorter path back to production,” Reniker said.
