HARRISBURG, PA — Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, in collaboration with DoorDash’s Project DASH, recently achieved a significant milestone by completing more than 250,000 food deliveries to homebound seniors and individuals struggling with food insecurity in the state. This innovative effort exemplifies how charitable organizations and private sector partnerships can bridge gaps in food access for vulnerable populations.
Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, which administers the Senior Food Box Program through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Commodities Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), has worked tirelessly to combat food insecurity, which disproportionately affects seniors. Barriers such as mobility issues and limited access to technology often prevent these individuals from receiving the assistance they need. By leveraging DoorDash’s technology and delivery network, the partnership ensures that nutritious food reaches seniors and other recipients without requiring them to leave their homes.
“Pennsylvania’s charitable food network is working aggressively to ensure none ever go hungry,” said Stuart I.R. Haniff, MHA, Executive Director of Hunger-Free Pennsylvania. “Especially now, when resources are stretched and need is at an all-time high, it is more important than ever for us to constantly innovate and look for new ways to make sure healthy meals get to those who need it most. This partnership with DoorDash is a perfect example of how we can extend the reach of our food banks to get food on the tables of individuals and families in need.”
Addressing Food Insecurity Among Seniors
The collaboration between Hunger-Free Pennsylvania and DoorDash, launched in September 2021, aligns with broader efforts to address the critical issue of food insecurity among seniors. According to experts, food insecurity can lead to malnutrition, which exacerbates chronic diseases, increases susceptibility to infections, prolongs hospital stays, and inflates healthcare costs. Delivering food directly to seniors through Project DASH mitigates these risks while breaking down the barriers that prevent access to food assistance programs.
“Working with Hunger-Free Pennsylvania, Project DASH has helped get groceries to seniors, working parents, and people who experience transportation, mobility, or other challenges,” said Daniel Riff, DoorDash’s Head of Government and Nonprofit Operations. “We’re proud to celebrate over 250,000 deliveries in partnership with Hunger-Free Pennsylvania and its members. We’re excited to help Hunger-Free Pennsylvania meet the need locally and continue to break down barriers for neighbors experiencing food insecurity.”
Significant Reach Across Pennsylvania
Hunger-Free Pennsylvania’s member food banks have delivered meals in 25 counties, reinforcing its widespread reach and impact. The 10 participating food banks include the Bucks County Opportunity Council, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, Greater Washington County Food Bank, Philabundance, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania, Share Food Program, Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank, Westmoreland County Food Bank, and York County Food Bank. The counties served span urban and rural areas, including Philadelphia, Allegheny, Westmoreland, York, Erie, and Bucks, among others.
Broader Impact of Project DASH
Launched in 2018, DoorDash’s Project DASH program has facilitated over six million deliveries across the U.S. and Canada, providing an estimated 100 million meals while saving recipients more than five million hours collectively. By enabling food banks and food pantries to utilize DoorDash’s delivery technology, the program has empowered local organizations to expand their reach and serve their communities more effectively.
A Vision for the Future
The milestone of 250,000 deliveries reflects the remarkable success of Hunger-Free Pennsylvania’s partnership with DoorDash in combating food insecurity. This accomplishment highlights what is possible when nonprofit organizations and private companies work together toward a common goal.
Efforts to address senior hunger and food insecurity remain ongoing, particularly as the demand for food assistance continues to rise. “This collaboration with DoorDash demonstrates the innovative approaches we will need to ensure that no Pennsylvanian goes hungry,” Haniff concluded.
As Hunger-Free Pennsylvania and DoorDash look to the future, their commitment to expanding food access remains steadfast. The initiative sets a strong example of how collaboration and technology can drive meaningful change in the fight against hunger.
